-{SE Mothers, Moms, Mommies!}- I have been meaning to write to you for a while. You and your children, have been on my heart over the last few weeks. I want to ask you all a question. It is a question my dear Pastor Deborah Dukes, posed to me years ago (to the congregation really, but I applied it personally)... a question that truly changed MY life and my daughter's life... I pray that you all will apply this question personally as well, and truly search your own heart.
The Bible instructs us very clearly, what our role as a parent is to be. There are a plethora of scripture; I will share two:
[Deuteronomy 6:6-9] And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
[Deuteronomy 4:9] “Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children—"
THE QUESTION IS THIS: How have you/do you actively play a role in cultivating your child's faith? Is the ONLY time they see you in prayer, reading your bible, in praise, or worship on SUNDAY during service? Does your LIFE example correspond with the Word and lessons you endeavor to instill upon them? Do you realize your ACTIONS speak volumes louder than your WORDS? Do you pray as a family? Do you read your bibles together? Practice memory verses? Do devotionals together?
What are you actively doing, as a (Christian) mother, to help grow your child's faith?
Now please know this -
I am not sharing this with you to leave you feeling "bad" in any way! This really isn't even about you and I - it is about our children - the GIFTS - God has entrusted to us. I am sharing this with you, because all those years ago, when my Pastor asked us this question - it HIT HOME. I acknowledged there was so much MORE I could be doing at home. I was a new Christian then and I soaked in everything I could. The thing that is the same THEN as it is NOW, is that I welcome ANY and EVERY opportunity to BECOME BETTER, to EVOLVE into a closer reflection of Christ. This is what I am inviting all SE Mothers to do today. Reflect. Search your heart. PRAY. Ask God to show you any areas in which you can improve and bless the lives of your children. My daughter was just around 1 or 2 years old then. *smile* Oh how I miss those days... Anyway, we began back then to do more. I went to the Family Christian store, I began to purchase bible story books, Princess Gigi Dvds and Veggie Tales Dvds. We read together. She saw me reading my bible at home, praying at home. We prayed together. Short simple prayers. Prayers she could repeat with me. Over time as she aged and matured, we added more to the list. Our prayers grew. We sing songs of praise & worship - together. We serve in outreach - together. We now have devotionals for mother and daughter. She has her own bible (which she loves!). She attends a Christian School. Back then I also joined the Nursery ministry at my church so I could serve my Church Home AND my daughter could be right there with me! To God be the glory! There is so much we can do with our children if we are INTENTIONAL.
SE Mommies - share your hearts with me. Where are you at? How old are your children? Do you find it challenging to grow their faith? Are you struggling in this area? We can benefit from this dialogue. We can share wonderful ways to sow into our children with one another! Let's talk! Comment below! Be blessed! ... And BE a blessing!
